Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional digestive disorders are among the most prevalent chronic health conditions — affecting an estimated 45 million Americans, with women twice as likely to be affected as men. They are also among the most frustrating to treat conventionally, as the underlying mechanisms are complex, the symptoms are highly variable, and standard pharmaceutical options offer only modest relief for many patients. Traditional Chinese Medicine has treated digestive disorders with great sophistication for thousands of years, and the clinical results we see at our Pearland clinic are consistently strong.

TCM and the Digestive System

In TCM, the Spleen and Stomach are the central axis of digestion — the Spleen transforms and transports food into Qi and Blood, while the Stomach receives food and "ripens" it for further processing. When these organ systems are weakened, disrupted, or invaded by pathogenic factors, the full range of digestive symptoms results. Key patterns include:

  • Liver overacting on Spleen (Liver-Spleen disharmony) — the most common IBS pattern. Stress directly disrupts digestion: bloating, alternating constipation and diarrhea, cramps that worsen with emotional stress, and relief after bowel movement. The Liver's Qi stagnation invades the Spleen's territory.
  • Spleen Qi deficiency — chronic loose stools, fatigue after eating, bloating, poor appetite, and a tendency to gain weight easily. The Spleen lacks the energy to transform and transport food.
  • Stomach Yin deficiency — dry mouth, hunger without appetite, constipation with dry stools, burning sensation in the stomach. Common in people who skip meals, eat irregularly, or have taken antibiotics repeatedly.
  • Cold-Damp in the Middle Jiao — diarrhea that worsens with cold food or weather, abdominal distension, nausea, and heavy limbs.
  • Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine — urgency, burning sensation, mucus in stools, and thirst. Often linked to a diet high in greasy, spicy foods or alcohol.

Treatment

A comprehensive digestive treatment plan at our clinic typically includes acupuncture twice weekly for the first month, then weekly as symptoms improve. Key acupoints include the "Four Gates" (LI4 and LV3) to regulate Liver-Spleen disharmony, ST36 (Zusanli) to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, CV12 to harmonize the Middle Jiao, and SP6 to nourish Spleen Yin and Blood.

Herbal medicine is particularly powerful for digestive conditions — formulas can be taken daily between sessions and provide sustained regulation of the digestive system's function. Diet and lifestyle guidance is always included in our treatment plans.
