From osteoarthritis to post-surgical recovery, knee pain is one of the most debilitating chronic conditions — and one of the most responsive to TCM care.
The knee is the largest joint in the body and one of the most mechanically complex — bearing the full weight of the body through a lifetime of walking, climbing, and movement. Knee pain affects people of all ages, from young athletes to older adults managing arthritis, and it is consistently one of the most common reasons patients seek acupuncture at our Pearland clinic.
"A month after starting acupuncture I have no IT band issues. I am walking normal. The acupuncture is the only treatment I am using and I feel absolutely wonderful." — Patient review
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, knee pain is most often attributed to two root mechanisms. The first is Kidney deficiency — the Kidney system governs bones and joints in TCM, and when Kidney Qi or Kidney Yang is depleted through aging, overwork, or constitutional weakness, the knees lose their nourishment and become vulnerable. This is why knee problems become more common with age. The second mechanism is Bi syndrome (痹症) — an obstruction of Qi and Blood flow through the knee joint caused by invasion of Cold, Damp, or Wind pathogens, or by internal stagnation from injury or chronic inflammation.
Your practitioner will identify your specific pattern and design a point prescription accordingly. Two patients with knee pain will often receive different treatments based on the quality, location, and aggravating factors of their symptoms.
Acupuncture for knee pain typically uses a combination of local points directly on and around the knee — in the soft tissue depressions around the patella, along the medial and lateral joint lines — and distal points on the leg and foot that influence Qi flow through the knee meridians. Moxibustion is frequently added when the pain is cold and aching in quality, and cupping along the thigh and calf releases fascial tension contributing to joint loading.
Herbal therapy is often prescribed alongside acupuncture for knee pain, particularly formulas that tonify Kidney Yang, move Blood stagnation, and reduce Damp accumulation in the joint.
Most patients notice meaningful reduction in pain and improved range of motion within the first 3–5 sessions.
